Former Newham Labour Councillor challenged to step down and trigger a by-election to give Canning Town residents a choice at the ballet box.

A Newham Labour Group spokesperson said:

“It is disappointing that one of the councillors in Canning Town North – elected as a Labour councillor for the first time just two years ago – is undermining trust in democracy by ignoring the democratic decision of voters in Canning Town North. While he’s chosen to join another political party, he isn’t giving local people a choice at the ballot box.”

“Serving local people is a privilege and to serve with a democratic mandate is an honour. That’s why he should do the right thing and stand down immediately to trigger a by-election so that people in Canning Town North can elect who they wish to represent them.”

“Labour in Newham are building a fairer Newham for everyone by investing in the things that matter most such as homes people can afford, clean streets and safer neighbourhoods. Newham Labour will continue delivering for the people of Canning Town North through councillors Rita Chadha and Shaban Mohammed who are active and visible Labour Party champions delivering for our local communities.”
